Automatic Transmission Fluid

The fluid level on most automatic transmissions is checked with a dipstick under the hood, similar to an oil dipstick. Keep in mind that an automatic CVT transmission may have a check plug instead of a dipstick. New automatic transmission fluid is typically dyed a pinkish-red color to keep it from being confused with engine oil and to help find leaks. Always check the owner’s manual for procedures and specifications. Note: To minimize the risk of internal damage from overfilling or adding the incorrect type of fluid, some automatic transmissions do not have a dipstick and must be checked with a special tool and/or procedure.
