Reducing Oil Dependence

Each day the U.S. consumes over 800 million gallons (over 3 billion L) of petroleum (crude oil). This is 22.5% of the total crude oil consumed around the world, although the U.S. only has approximately 4.5% (over 300 million) of the world population. Over half of all the petroleum in the U.S. is used for gasoline.
