Radiator Fan

Radiator fans draw air through the radiator to cool the coolant. Fans are either mechanically or electrically driven. A mechanical fan is driven by a belt. An electrical fan is driven by an electric motor. Most newer vehicles use an electric fan because it is more efficient and more suitable for front-wheel drive vehicles with transverse engines. Use caution when working on a vehicle with an electric fan. Electric fans can start without the engine running. Keep your fingers away from the fan area. If you need to work near an electric fan, disconnect your vehicle’s negative battery cable.
